Who is behind BlueGuard snow removal?

BlueGuard, an established home services company that already works in Ottawa homes year-round. The snow service runs from our Barrhaven base and covers every address within 20 km of it, Aylmer and Hull on the Quebec side included. It is an extension of the existing business, not a separate venture borrowing a name.

The parent company runs residential home services across the Ottawa region, and the snow routes sit inside that ground: 20 km around our Barrhaven base. That overlap is the reason the snow service exists: the geography, the customer relationships and the insurance are already in place, and winter was the part of the year with capacity in it.

It holds a 4.9-star Google rating on that existing work. Those reviews are for home services, not for snow removal, and you will not find them presented as anything else on this site. They tell you how the company handles scheduling, communication and problems — which is genuinely useful, and is not the same as a snow record.

The operators running the snow service carry commercial general liability cover and a City of Ottawa permit. Both are documents rather than claims, and we will show them to you before you sign anything.

What is new here, and why do we say so?

Snow removal is a new service line for BlueGuard; the company behind it is not. This is the first winter of snow routes, while the scheduling, insurance, invoicing and customer service around them carry over from the existing home services business. Most companies entering a market write around that. Here is the version without the writing-around.

Snow removal is a first season

There is no winter of completed routes behind this service. Anyone telling you they have run your street for years either has, or is counting on you not checking. We have not, and this is us saying so before you find out another way.

What carries over is real, though

Route planning, dispatch, insurance, invoicing and the awkward phone call when something goes wrong are not snow-specific skills. They are the parts of a service business that most often fail, and they are the parts that are not new here.

It is why the commitments are written down

A new service line cannot ask to be trusted on reputation, so it has to be specific instead: a numbered trigger, a stated coverage figure, a defined callback policy, a fixed price. Those are checkable, which a reputation is not.

And why the radius is tight

The service stops 20 km from our Barrhaven base. Short, dense routes finish overnight, and they allow one price everywhere, with no zones and no travel charge, instead of making anyone pay for the drive. A snow company that overbooks its first season is a snow company whose last customers spend February waiting.

BEFORE YOU HIRE ANYONE

What should you check before hiring a snow contractor?

Check four things: the insurance certificate, the trigger as a number, what happens past the snowfall cap, and who answers the phone in February. These separate a contractor who has thought about the winter from one who has not. Ask them of us, and ask them of anyone else you are considering.

Ask to see the insurance

Not "we are fully insured" on a website — the certificate, with the coverage amount and the expiry date. Ottawa’s property maintenance by-law puts the hazard obligation on the property owner, so an uninsured contractor on your driveway is your exposure, not theirs.

Ask what the trigger is, as a number

If the answer is "when it needs it", you have found the clause every winter dispute starts with. A number in an agreement can be checked against a public forecast; a judgement call cannot be checked at all.

Ask what happens past the snowfall cap

Most season contracts have one and most people never find it. Ask what the figure is, and what happens on the storm after it. A contractor who cannot answer that from memory has not read their own agreement.

Ask who answers the phone in February

Sign-up season is September and everyone is responsive in September. The question is who picks up at 6am after the third storm in a week, and whether a callback costs anything.

Your agreement covers the season and we honour it. If the answer to that question mattered enough for you to ask it, ask it of every contractor you are considering — it is a fair question and the answers vary more than you would expect.
